UK Election Debate
Nick Clegg had the best opening statement.
First question was on immigration. Clegg seems to be offering a fresh approach while Brown and Cameroon are arguing about a cap on immigration.
Second question is on crime. Clegg makes the point that he will put 3000 police officers on the street and pay for it by not introducing ID-cards. Brown says that Labour will maintain number of police as it is the highest ever and that citizens will have the right to remove ineffectual police. Cameroon ads that drugs is a main cause. Clegg is running circles around the other two.
Now onto expenses. Clegg says there are still a lot of MPs that needs to be dealt with. MPs that flipped homes and pocketed the difference. Brown says he was angry and it was brought up to behave better – only problem is that he was in charge. Is he angry with himself? Cameroon says he was angry. Clegg says well its all well to talk tough but it is what you do what counts. Clegg asks why Brown and Cameroon voted against the idea to give people the right to sack their MP. Brown and Cameroon gets into an argument about hereditary peers in the lords. Brown challenges Cameroon do be against, Cameroon says why have you not done anything about it.
Now education. Brown says nothing with a lot of words. Cameroon says we spend a lot but nothing is getting to the frontline it is mostly “wasted in Whitehall”. Clegg says that a curriculum needs to be 16 pages not 4000 pages of instructions from Whitehall. Brown falls back on statistics proving Labour is on right track. Cameroon and Clegg says let headteachers do their work. Cameroon says do not treat teachers like kids. Clegg wants smaller class sizes. Brown says money is important as well as creativity and discipline. Brown says Conservatives will cut money for education. Clegg says we need less bureaucracy and Saturday and night classes.
Economy now. Questioner asks how will you deal with deficit without de-railing the economy? Cameroon emphasizes responsibility. Clegg says we need to be honest and straightforward – we have set out how we will do it and it wont please everyone. Brown says he fears that if we cut funding now we threaten recovery, in essence that only he can be trusted. Cameroon says that why would it hurt if we cut waste. Clegg says let us understand that cutting waste is not going to get us there, we have set out how.
Next question on underpay in the army. Clegg says army is underpaid and under-equipped. He would cut Trident and other spending and focus on the soldier. Brown says we need to recognize sacrifice on the frontline and that he he making the right investments. Cameroon says he appreciates the sacrifice and says he is fighting cuts to army spending. Clegg says we need to invest in smarter and better equipment. Brown says we are making the right investments and we must not forget why we are in Afghanistan. Cameroon says we need a review of what and how we spend (yawn). Clegg also wants review because the world is changing – but says we dont need Trident.
Debate turns nuclear with Brown and Cameroon attacking Clegg. The world has moved on says Clegg, lets not spend money on cold war defense.Somewhat absurdly turns into a helicopter argument between Brown and Cameroon.
Now onto health. What are the parties vision on future of health the questioner says. Brown says he will guarantee a range of rights as well as the right to be treated at home if you are old. Cameroon thanks the questioner for working in the NHS and praises the NHS. The NHS budget should grow, develop and improve. No details. Clegg says priorities are wrong. Spend less on computer system and more on A&E and maternity. Brown says more nurses and doctors is the key. Says Cameroon will not pledge the guarantee. Cameroon says why have you not done anything about it – we need faster and choice driven system.
Turns into a low-level argument on who likes cancer patients the most.
Last question: when will the parties say how they will help and support the elderly better. Cameroon says how much he likes older people. Then something about how they will do the right thing. Clegg says politicians should set aside their differences and work together to solve this important problem. Also says he wants to reward carers. Brown says elderly people should not have to chose between home and nursing home. Care will be free as it will take away worry. People will be guaranteed long term care, A new commission will look into it. Clegg says system is unfair. Cameroon says carers are heroes. Clegg agrees. Brown says he likes carers too and they deserve a holiday.
Now the closing statements.
Clegg stresses that there is a new way instead of the old (conservative and labour). Do not let them make the same promises and break them. make the same mistakes. He wants a better fairer country.
Brown says it has been its been a good opportunity to exchange the ideas. Says securing the economy is the most important thing. Then that he will protect police, school and health. Points out that conservatives do not protect these things.
Cameroon says do not believe their lies about how conservatives will cut. We have a positive message. we are behind you no matter what but we all need to come together.
funny mum
Got an email from my mum this morning. She was clearing the attic and found this 4-cm piece of art made by me. She wanted to know if it should be saved? Maybe framed? Did I want it shipped to Switzerland? My girlfriend also helpfully pointed out that it quite possibly wouldn’t roll as the “wheels” appeared to be glued on.
People just don’t know how to appreciate real art anymore.
quote of the day
“I Phillip Garrido have clearly demonstrated the ability to control sound with my mind and have developed a device for others to witness this phenomena. I have produced a set of voices by effectively controlling the sound to pronounce words through my own mental powers.”
Phillip Garrido was arrested on Thursday for kidnapping 11-year old Jaycee Dugard in 1991 and keeping her captive for two decades.
